Bootcamp Build or Die

Had you ever think how new ideas are crafted, developed and validated? We found that great people need to have an environment that facilitated disruption and exploration of new ideas. If you read articles, newspapers and watch videos on Internet about the products that came to the market and ask you how these crazy ideas happens in the first place. You say that you don’t understand who somebody imagine things that after some time they become a day to day tool, activity or resource that you use naturally in your activities, while some of them has some tag price to pay and others  are free.

These ideas born in a complete serendipity condition, when people is talking about a problem, when they propose ideas to friends and these ideas transform into some other way of solving the problem and develop in a random path to find the right solution, that fit into a market and develop into a company.

The lean startup methodology is a great tool to develop them. Using the basic concept, that has been very successfully implemented in events like Lean Startup Machine or The Startup Weekend, where you have a process that start with tenths of ideas pitched in one minute each, perform a first validation of finding interest in a group to solve the problem together. Then you develop a value proposition to use as a base for customer development to identify that could use it, who they could be interested to paid for it and define a minimum value product (MVP) that is worthwhile for the customer.

You build a MVP then you get out of the building to do customer validation and find the elements to build a business model to start exploring how feasible is to become a good business, identify the resources needed to make it, elaborate in how to reach customers, evaluate how much it cost to get the customers and finally work in running the first full cycle of the business. In later stages, you will focus in how to scale and expand the opportunity.

All this process can be run in a weekend to learn the process, when you want to take it formal for doing a real project and develop everything in detail, you will need a longer time, therefore is where we create the Bootcamp Build or Die to carry the full cycle in 30 hard working days. We enhance the experience by doing in a group of 20 companies; each one has at least two participants a technology leader and a business leader. Also the event is carried out in Silicon Valley as an immersion program that allow companies from abroad the world from any country or even from other place of the USA. The experience started with a Scavenger Hunt in the Silicon Valley area to make the participants familiar with the area, use the public transportation and find where the action happens. Then the participants in the bootcamp are part of the local Startup Weekend in San Jose, a great opportunity to mix with the local people that have the same interest to learn how to build a great company. It is great that the participants went to a local Startup Weekend in their own towns. This make the experience much more valuable, since they already have an idea what is going to be doing, otherwise it is a great time to learn about it.

After the two initial activities, the participants start to build their own project in the Bootcamp covering four weeks of activities; each one has the following focus:

  • Customer Development – learn about the customer profile, define it and identify where this profile is located and how to reach them. The final result need to be supported with an MVP to go to the next step.
  • Customer Acquisition – find how you hypothesis to reach the people, learn from their feedback about the MVP, identify if they are really interested in your product. With the feedback find how to adapt your value proposition, review your customer profile and modify your product to satisfy the Problem to Solution Fit stage. When you accomplish this stage, is time to validate the Solution to Market Fit, where you identify how strong is the need in the market, how well you cure the pain, and how big is the market to produce a product that is reachable to your customers in quantity, delivery and price.
  • Business Modeling – If the market wants your product, you know who much it cost to reach the market and has a good understanding of the way to produce and deliver it to end users or distribution channels you are able to create a Business Model for your product
  • Metrics and Scaling – is the stage where you can evaluate how fast and viable is your company tap with the desired target market and you can build your infrastructure and internal organization to satisfy your goals.

The Bootcamp build a unique environment that nurture the participants mindset, every day is structured in four general segments:

  • Lesson Learned – early in morning the first activity is conducted as a sharing the experiences from the day before. The first hour all the participants share what they learn the day before along the full day in any of the activities they carried out. This session enhance the learning among the group; increase the value of the networking done by each participant, since they can share contacts or situations that could be valuable for other person in the group.
  • Concepts and Workshop – it is the core session where every day the participants move forward with their projects, under a prearranged agenda, each day has a one or two hour session covering the material of the next step to be carried out by the companies. Then the companies develop their work in the day, under their own schedule.
  • Mentoring – during the day, the instructor is available for a one on one conversation and mentoring to help the companies to achieve their goals.
  • Interaction y Networking – Silicon Valley is a great place to meet people, learn from others in events and meetups and go around to talk to people that is working in the same field like you. In this sense, the end of each day, each participant go to their own events to find people that can be of interest as a partner, customer, alliance or mentors. This stage is so important for the companies, because they start to open new venues to access the pool of talent, any kind of resources and unveil great opportunities.

The Bootcamp Build or Die is a unique resource to explore crazy ideas, validate them and find the way to put them on the market. We would like to see you in one of our bootcamps and be the innovator that will create the next big thing.
